Nigel Evans, Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley, has echoed the Conservative Party’s calls for a referendum on the EU Lisbon Treaty. Mr Evans commented,“The Party has been calling for a referendum ever since the Government reneged on its manifesto promise to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution. I do not believe that there is a doubt in anybody’s (politician’s, commentator’s or member of the public’s) mind that the Lisbon Treaty is almost identical to the Constitution. “Moving paragraphs and sections around, giving it a different name and banging on that it is ‘significantly different’ cannot and should not fool anybody. “The simple fact of the matter is that the British people were promised a referendum and they should be given one. “In the meantime, we must also look to support the Irish people who have already voted “NO” but have been bounced by certain Members of the EU into holding a second referendum. “Gordon Brown has two moral imperatives if he is to prove that he respects democracy and the people that he is as yet unelected to represent. Firstly he must give the British people a referendum on Lisbon. Secondly, his Government must uphold European democracy by supporting the Irish “NO” vote – it is unacceptable and ironically unconstitutional to make them vote again.”
