Ribble Valley Conservatives welcome the result of the AV referendum in which there was a 44% turnout in the Ribble Valley , 20299, with 4982 voting in favour and 15158 against . Senior Vice Chairman Ken Hind commented ''With a 44 % turnout and 74.8 voting against the Ribble Valley resoundingly rejected AV as a voting system for the UK . ''This was a cross party campaign with Labour and Conservatives working together. It was far from a one party view with the Prime Minister , Labour politicians like John Prescott , John Reid, Margaret Beckett and John Healey as well as fromer LiB Dem leader Lord David Owen working together. We would to thank all the people in the Ribble Valley who supported the NO2AV campaign for their support . This referendum was fought out on the internet as much as on the doorstep. Ribble Valley Borough Council was the first to count and submit the numbers to the Electoral Commission in the North West region. 19.1m people voted in the second UK-wide referendum in history - a higher than expected turnout of 41%.The final result put the Yes vote at 32.1% and the No vote at 67.9%.with 6,152,607 in favour and 13,013 123 against . The Prime Minister David Cameron said the British public have given the most clear and resounding answer to keep first past the post. Moving forward, he stressed that the Coalition will continue to provide "a good, strong, decisive government in the long term national interest of this country.That's what we've been for this last year, and that's what we're going to be for the rest of this Parliament." David Cameron said the Coalition has vital issues ahead on welfare reform, improving schools and dealing with Labour's terrible economic legacy. |
