Nigel Evans Chairs Roundtable Discussion On Youth Volunteers

Nigel Evans, Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley, today hosted the All China Youth Federation Delegation during a roundtable discussion that focussed on youth volunteers. Joining Nigel were Jeremy Hunt MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Nick Hurd MP, Shadow Minister for Charities, Social Enterprise and Volunteering. Also attending the meeting were representatives of the British Council, the British Youth Council, the Chinese Embassy and a group of Young Icebreakers.

Leading the All China Youth Federation Delegation was its Vice-President, Lu Yongzheng. Mr. Lu Yongzheng has been serving as the Vice President of the All-China Youth Federation since 2005, responsible for international affairs, young volunteers work and schooling affairs. Prior to that, he was serving as the Secretary-general of the All-China Students’ Federation from 2003 to 2005.

Speaking after the meeting Mr Evans said:

“I thought that the meeting was a great success. I think that China and the UK have a lot that they can learn from each other. We talked extensively about the London 2012 Olympics and how successful the Beijing Olympics had been in mobilising youth volunteers.

“We discussed, amongst other things, the practicalities of a Minister for Youth Affairs, how volunteering can be made attractive to young people and how social enterprise can be advanced amongst young people.

“The nature of the discussion brought together parliamentarians, organisations and young people and I was grateful to be asked to be involved.

“On another note, as Honorary President of the British Youth Council, I am now very much looking forward to the British Youth Parliament sitting in the House of Commons at the end of this month. This will be an historic event because this will be the first time anybody other than British MPs have sat in the House of Commons.”
